Description
General description
Propionic acid is a linear monocarboxylic acid. It affords
esters on reaction with alcohols or alkenes. It can be synthesized by reacting
ethane, carbon monoxide and water.[2] It
participates as a precursor in the preparation of smallest azolium homoenolate
intermediate.[3]
Application
Propionic acid may be used in the synthesis of cellulose
propionate (cellulose ester).[1]
